Orlaya Grandiflora — 6 Jumbo Plug Plants
Elegant lace-white umbels for the cutting garden, loved by florists
If you’re looking for a flower that turns every arrangement into something refined and natural, Orlaya Grandiflora is it. Known as the white lace flower, it produces wafer-light umbels that look like pressed snowflakes hovering over lush green foliage. Each bloom is a perfect miniature lace doily — crisp white, intricate and incredibly airy. It’s one of those quiet heroes of the cutting garden that makes everything around it look better.
Unlike seed-grown trays that arrive spindly, we supply 6 strong jumbo plug plants, properly rooted and raised here on our South Devon nursery. They’re grown in peat-free compost, hardened naturally, and shipped in biodegradable or reusable Hado bags so your plants arrive happy, hydrated and ready to plant.
Why Orlaya is a florist favourite
Orlaya brings the same aesthetic value as Ammi or Queen Anne’s Lace, but with a much more refined, neat and floral-forward structure. The umbels are flatter, crisp, and sit beautifully on strong stems. They read as white, but they never feel heavy — they simply lift the entire composition.
Flower arrangers adore it because:
-
It adds a wild, meadowy softness without chaos
-
It blends effortlessly with roses, dahlias, cosmos, ranunculus, campanula and delphinium
-
The stems are clean, straight and easy to place
-
It holds beautifully in the vase
-
Each bloom looks delicate, but the plants are surprisingly tough
Orlaya is also one of the best flowers for bridal work — it adds lightness and romance, weaving between bigger focal blooms like a lace veil.
Raised on our Devon nursery — strong, hardy & garden-ready
We grow Orlaya just like we do for the farm itself: real light, fresh air, changing temperatures and gentle spacing. That makes our plugs:
-
Sturdy rooted
-
Not leggy or soft
-
Used to UK weather
-
Quick to settle after planting
This matters, because Orlaya can sulk if grown too fast or too soft. Our plants arrive ready to thrive — not shiver. They are grown in peat-free compost from day one, and every order ships in biodegradable or reusable Hado bags rather than plastic trays.
Your plants will be sent in mid–late March, weather dependent. You’ll receive a Royal Mail email or text when they’re dispatched so you know exactly when to expect them.
Where to plant & how to care
Orlaya rewards minimal fuss. It simply wants a good spot and then to get on with the job.
Position
-
Full sun or very light shade
-
Free-draining soil (very important)
-
Excellent in cutting beds, cottage gardens & naturalistic planting
Spacing
-
25–30cm apart — Orlaya appreciates airflow and room to branch
Watering
-
Water well upon arrival and during establishment
-
Once settled, it is wonderfully drought tolerant
Feeding
-
Light feeders — a balanced feed once or twice a month is more than enough
-
Avoid rich nitrogen fertilisers which create floppy stems
Blooms that keep giving
Orlaya flowers generously throughout early Summer and is an earlier flowerer than other umbellifers such as Amni Majus, the more you harvest, the more it produces. The umbels come in waves, each slightly taller and fuller, extending your harvest window beautifully. Grown under cover guarantees taller stems than outside.
Once flowering slows, the seed heads are elegant too — fine, spoked structures with a natural sculptural quality. They’re lovely in dried arrangements or left in the garden to quietly self-sow. Unlike some self-seeders, Orlaya is polite. It drifts gently, popping up where conditions are right, never aggressive or smothering.
