Growing Sweet Peas from seed is easy and rewarding to do.  The first scent of a sweet pea flower each year becomes an annual event to look forward to., once experienced it’s not easily forgotten!  Our seed gathered here at the flower farm will be a pastel colour mix.

Growing Guide
Sweet Peas are very easy to grow and you can start seeds in Spring or Autumn.
Seeds can be soaked in water for 3-4 hours before sowing, or just plant straight from the packet (we never soak our seed.)  Germination takes between 10-14  days with a temperature between 15-18 C.  Protect the seed from mice and grow plants on in a cold greenhouse or polytunnel until planting out – they are hardier than you might think and can take some frost.  (Protect from very deep cold.)
Situate these hardy annuals in full sun, give support for the stems to scramble over and cut stems regularly to encourage repeat flowering.

Saving seed and sharing locally sourced seeds varieties are so important for a variety of reasons…

Often the seeds are better suited to the specific UK growing environment, soil conditions and pests of the area increasing the likelihood of successful sowings and higher yields from flower harvests.

Supporting local seed suppliers helps preserve genetic diversity which is crucial for maintaining resilient plant populations and ensuring the survival of native plant varieties.

Locally sourced seeds reduce the carbon footprint associated with imported seed supporting sustainable agriculture.
