A soft cloud of white blooms for cutting & cottage gardens

Nigella Miss Jekyll White is one of those dreamy, old-fashioned flowers that looks as if it has drifted in from a painting. Light, airy, and beautifully romantic, it produces pure white papery flowers that sit above fine, mist-like foliage—hence its nickname, Love-in-a-Mist. It has that “I didn’t try too hard” effortless look that every cottage garden aspires to, yet it behaves so kindly in the garden and cutting patch.

These aren’t flimsy seedlings or plugs that disappear after planting. We send 6 strong jumbo plug plants, raised carefully here at our South Devon nursery using peat-free compost, fresh air, and real garden conditions. They’re ready to plant straight away, adapting quickly and producing sturdy growth you can rely on. And you’ll receive them in our biodegradable or reusable Hado plant bags, designed to protect roots and reduce packaging waste.

If you love white flowers in the cutting garden, you’ll adore Miss Jekyll White. It’s soft and romantic while still providing structure, and it mingles beautifully with just about everything. Once the flowers fade, it gives you its second act: truly beautiful seed pods—rounded, balloon-like and delicately veined. They’re beloved by florists and dried flower makers alike.

Why Nigella is a florist’s secret weapon

Nigella doesn’t shout. It whispers. And that quiet elegance makes it one of the most valuable filler plants you can grow. Whether you are arranging flowers for a wedding, bouquets for stalls, or simply filling vases at home, Miss Jekyll Whiteadds:

  • Gentle height

  • Fine texture

  • Soft movement

  • That “garden gathered” feel we all love

Use the fresh flowers to lighten and brighten arrangements. Then use the pods for sculptural lines, autumn bouquets, wreaths, dried installations and even festive decorations. It’s one of the few flowers that gives you two seasons of use from one sowing.

How our jumbo plug plants are grown

We grow all of our Nigella plugs here in Devon, from seed to plant. Our trays live outside and in natural airflow as much as possible, so when they reach you, they are:

  • Strong rooted

  • Hardy and ready to grow

  • Already accustomed to weather variations

  • Not “soft” or greenhouse-pampered

We raise everything in peat-free compost, because sustainability matters. The plants travel to you in Hado biodegradable or reusable grow bags, which protect the plugs and reduce plastic waste. Your order will be sent in mid–late March, weather dependent, and you’ll receive a Royal Mail email/text notification when they’re on the way.

Planting & growing tips

Nigella is wonderfully unfussy. Plant your plugs directly outside once the risk of frost has passed.

Where to plant

  • Full sun is ideal, though light shade is fine

  • Any well-draining soil

  • Works beautifully in borders, cutting beds, cottage gardens and naturalistic plantings

Spacing

  • Give each plant around 20–25cm to breathe

  • They don’t like being crowded—airflow equals healthier plants

Watering

  • Keep watered during establishment

  • Once roots settle, Nigella is very drought-tolerant

Feeding

  • Nigella isn’t greedy; a balanced feed every few weeks is more than enough

  • Avoid excessive nitrogen—it encourages foliage at the expense of flowers

Self-sowing and pods — a gift for the future

Nigella is the gentle volunteer of the garden. It self-seeds in the prettiest way, wandering into corners and path edges, never invasive or thuggish. Leave a few pods to dry on the plant and it will give you a sprinkling of new plants next year. Many growers find that once they’ve planted Nigella once, it becomes a familiar friend season after season.

And those pods… they are where the real magic happens. Each one dries into a sculptural capsule with filigree tracings—so beautiful in dried wreaths, table arrangements and retail bouquets. Harvest when they begin to blush green to straw, or let them ripen fully if you’d like a new generation of seedlings.
