Nigella or love in a mist is one of those flowers that once you’ve grown you’ll wonder where it’s been all of your gardening life!
We grow several varieties at the farm and our collected seed will be a mix of blues and whites. Nigella often gently self seeds itself around once established in a garden. The flowers will continue to bloom if regularly harvested or dead headed, any flowers that are left will form beautiful seed pods that can also be dried and used in floristry.
Saving seed and sharing locally sourced seeds varieties are so important for a variety of reasons…
Often the seeds are better suited to the specific UK growing environment, soil conditions and pests of the area increasing the likelihood of successful sowings and higher yields from flower harvests.
Supporting local seed suppliers helps preserve genetic diversity which is crucial for maintaining resilient plant populations and ensuring the survival of native plant varieties.
Locally sourced seeds reduce the carbon footprint associated with imported seed supporting sustainable agriculture.
