Nigella Blue Amelia’s Mix — 6 Jumbo Plug Plants
A dreamy blend of blues & whites — grown and seed-collected on our Devon flower farm
Nigella Blue Amelia’s Mix is a true farm favourite and a variety with a lovely story. It isn’t a commercial uniform strain — it’s a hand-collected seed mix grown here at our South Devon flower farm, selected from the most beautiful blue and white blooms in our cutting patch. If you’ve ever stood in front of a summer border and wished it looked a little more wild, airy, romantic and painterly, this is exactly the plant you want.
This mix gives you soft sky-blues, deeper denim tones, chalky whites, and occasionally a gentle blend between them. The colours drift through the garden like a summer breeze — no two stems look the same, which makes it irresistible to home growers and florists alike. And unlike seed-grown mail-order options, these are 6 strong jumbo plug plants, already rooted, already sturdy, and ready to get going as soon as you plant them.
We raise your Nigella here in Devon using peat-free compost, fresh air and natural daylight so they are robust, garden-ready and not the weak, greenhouse-pampered seedlings so often sold online. Your plugs are shipped in our biodegradable or reusable Hado bags, which protect the root ball and reduce plastic waste.
A garden of soft movement and texture
Nigella belongs to that special group of flowers that don’t just bloom — they breathe life into a space. The finely divided foliage creates a “mist” around the blooms, softening everything nearby. Blue Amelia’s Mix isn’t a block colour— it’s a living gradient across blue and white, with every plant flowering slightly differently. That natural variation is part of its charm.
In the cutting garden or border, the effect is magical:
-
Pale baby blues that look cool in morning light
-
Deep dusk blues that contrast beautifully with warm-toned flowers
-
Crisp whites that reset and balance your display
-
Gentle blends that feel like watercolour paint on paper
If you grow florals for bouquets, this mix makes arranging feel effortless. Even a handful of stems in a vase suddenly looks styled — as if you’ve gathered them from a Mediterranean garden.
Grown from our own seed — a sustainable closed loop
One of the most special things about our Blue Amelia’s Mix is that it comes from seeds we collect ourselves on the farm. We select:
-
Strong plants
-
Interesting tones
-
Good stem length
-
Healthy growth
-
Productive flowering habit
Every year the seed mix evolves ever so slightly, shaped by weather, bees, and the natural character of Nigella. This keeps it genetic, alive and biodiverse, which is exactly how cottage garden plants should be. They are reliable without being sterile or uniform — they behave like plants, not factory-made replicas.
Because our stock is accustomed to being outdoors, the plugs you receive are already acclimatised to UK conditions. That means:
-
No shocky, floppy transplants
-
Strong roots
-
Better drought tolerance
-
Quick establishment
They’ve never seen heated glass — they can go straight into real soil and get on with the job.
Planting & care (beautifully simple)
Nigella is famously forgiving. Plant straight into the border, raised bed or cutting patch.
Where to plant
-
Full sun is ideal
-
Light shade is fine
-
Needs free-draining soil
Spacing
-
20–25cm between plants — don’t overcrowd; airflow helps stem strength
Watering
-
Water well when planting and while establishing
-
After that, Nigella is drought-tolerant and low effort
Feeding
-
Not greedy! A gentle balanced feed occasionally is plenty
-
Avoid heavy nitrogen — you want flowers, not just foliage
Two crops in one — blooms and pods
Just when you think Nigella is finished, it gives you its second act. The seed pods form — rounded, balloon-like capsules with delicate stripes. They are florist gold. In summer bouquets they add texture and personality; when dried, they’re sculptural and long lasting. We dry them for wreaths, winter arrangements, and even festive displays.
If you allow some pods to ripen, Blue Amelia’s Mix will self-sow itself gently, popping up here and there in the most charming way. Not invasive — just polite, helpful, and always pretty.
