Delphinium Elatum Candle Light Blue Shades – Cutting Variety (6 Jumbo Plug Plants)
600+ word product description
Delphinium Elatum Candle Light Blue Shades is a beautifully elegant tall delphinium, distinguished by its slim, tapering candle-like spires and its serene range of soft sky-blue, powder-blue and misty light blue blooms. Part of the traditional Candle Series, this variety offers height, grace and superb early-season performance, producing long, slender stems that are ideal for cutting while remaining refined enough to integrate seamlessly into cottage borders, mixed perennial plantings and more modern naturalistic schemes. Its blooms open in cool, calm tones that bring lightness and clarity to the garden, making it one of the most versatile blue delphiniums for both design and floristry.
Our Delphinium Elatum Candle Light Blue Shades are grown in South Devon in peat-free compost and supplied as six strong jumbo plug plants. Each plug is selected for its cutting-grade quality, with uniform growth, well-developed roots and the sturdy stem base required for long, straight flowering spikes. We pack our plugs in biodegradable and reusable hado bags, which keep the plants hydrated and protected during delivery, ensuring they reach you in perfect condition and ready for planting.
What sets the Candle Series apart is its combination of height and refinement. While many tall delphiniums produce broad, weighty spires, Candle Light Blue Shades forms slimmer, more architectural stems that rise cleanly above the foliage, creating a sense of movement and vertical lift without overwhelming the rest of the planting. This makes it especially valuable in narrower borders, mixed planting schemes or spaces where airflow is important. The Candle Series is also known for its earlier flowering window and its ability to produce a reliable second flush when deadheaded promptly.
The colouring of Candle Light Blue Shades is one of its greatest attractions. Rather than a single fixed hue, the blooms range through a soft gradient of pale blues, from cool sky tones to misty, almost silvery light blue. In certain lights the flowers can carry the faintest whisper of lavender or ice blue, giving them a luminous quality that stands out beautifully in early summer borders. These calming tones pair particularly well with whites, soft pinks, mauves and silvers, and they bring a cool, airy freshness to arrangements. In floral work, their slender spires create elegant lines, making them ideal for hand-tied bouquets, centrepieces and more contemporary designs.

How to grow Delphinium Elatum Candle Light Blue Shades
Plant after the last frost in full sun, in rich, well-drained soil with added organic matter. Space plants 40–50 cm apart and water deeply to help them establish. Protect young shoots from slugs early in the season, and provide light staking in windy areas to support tall stems. Deadhead after flowering to encourage a second flush. Feed throughout the growing season for strong, flower-rich plants with long-lasting spikes.
