Annual Scabious Amelias Pastel Mix — Farm-Collected (6 Jumbo Plug Plants)

The most romantic cottage-garden cut flower in dreamy sherbet tones

If there is one flower that captures the gentle charm of an English cutting garden, it’s annual Scabious. Our Pastel Mix is extra special because it’s grown from seed collected here on our South Devon flower farm. Each year, we let a selection of our favourite plants go to seed, choosing those with the strongest stems, prettiest colours and longest vase life. We then sow that seed to produce the plugs you receive — a closed-loop, locally adapted line that thrives in real UK growing conditions.

This mix blooms in soft, painterly shades: powder blue, blush pink, antique cream, dusty lilac, lavender grey and gentle peach. The flowers float above fine green stems like paper confetti, bringing instant movement and elegance to beds and bouquets. They have that magical “wild but refined” quality customers adore, and on the farm, they are always in the top handful of flowers visitors ask about.

Why Scabiosa is a cutting garden staple

Scabiosa has everything a flower grower dreams of:

  • Long, slender stems that don’t collapse or tangle

  • Multiple harvestable blooms from each plant

  • Excellent vase life — 6–10 days with a fresh cut

  • Pollinator friendly, especially bees and butterflies

  • Charming seed pods that form once flowers fade — adored by florists

It is gentle, airy and romantic, but still highly productive. Once established, the plants produce bloom after bloom, and the more you harvest, the more they flower. This is why we grow them year after year — they just work.

The blooms and their magical pin-cushion centres

Annual scabious is often called “pincushion flower,” and one glance explains why. The centres form a raised dome surrounded by delicate ruffled petals. In the pastel mix, these centres can vary from milky cream to soft lavender, with petals that glow like washed silk.

When the flowers are fully open, they read as elegant and feminine. When they first emerge, they’re tight, spherical domes — perfect for early harvest as textural accents. And when they go over, they transform into sculptural pods that dry beautifully. Many growers cut them specifically for autumn wreaths and winter arrangements.

About your plants

You will receive 6 jumbo plug plants, raised responsibly in peat-free compost and grown in fresh air, rain and real South Devon daylight. These aren’t tiny seedlings — they are sturdy, well-rooted plugs that transplant easily and hit the ground running.

We pack all plants in biodegradable or reusable Hado bags, which protect roots during shipping and minimise waste.

️ Planting and care (simple + successful)

Scabiosa is wonderfully easy to grow:

  • Plant into full sun or very light afternoon shade

  • Prefers free-draining soil — raised beds or borders are ideal

  • Space each plant 25–30cm apart to encourage airflow and branching

  • Water well in the first week, then normally after that

  • Harvest deep once stems reach cutting length — don’t be shy

The trick with scabiosa is regular picking. Treat it like cosmos or snapdragons: the more stems you take, the more it rewards you. Even if you’re not cutting for bouquets, it will look fuller and perform better when lightly deadheaded.

For florists & home arrangers

If you love delicate, movement-filled bouquets, this pastel mix is a dream. It pairs beautifully with:

  • Snapdragons

  • Campanula

  • Larkspur

  • Cosmos

  • Cornflowers

  • Daucus Carota

  • Orlaya

  • Panicum Frosted Explosion

Because the colours sit in the milky pastel family, it integrates into almost any palette. Use it to soften bold dahlias, or let it shine in cottage-style bunches with wild grasses and airy fillers.

Even a handful of stems in a jam jar vase looks effortless and charming — perfect for kitchen tables, event centrepieces and wedding work.

Seed pods worth saving

One of the joys of growing annual scabiosa is the beautiful seed heads. After flowering, the pincushion centres dry into sculptural discs and are perfect for:

  • Autumn bouquets

  • Floral installations

  • Wreaths

  • Christmas dried work

Because you receive farm-adapted plants, you’ll likely see some gentle self-seeding if allowed — never invasive, just little surprises the next spring.

Why our Pastel Mix is special

This isn’t a generic seed-pack blend.
It is a hand-selected, farm-collected line, saved from the best performers on our fields — strong stems, gorgeous pastel tones and reliable flowering in UK conditions. You are growing something that has already proved itself here, season after season.
