Nigella Delft Blue — 6 Jumbo Plug Plants

Painterly blue-and-white blooms with exquisite seed pods

Nigella Delft Blue is the art lover’s Nigella — soft white petals painted with delicate blue brushstrokes, like porcelain or hand-inked tiles. Every flower is unique, with different levels of wash, speckle and marbling. Some lean white with china-blue tips; others are dusted fully in cool denim tones. Together, they create a meadowy, romantic haze that feels effortless and natural — the very essence of the cottage garden.

We supply 6 robust jumbo plug plants, not fragile seedlings. They’re grown in peat-free compost in our South Devon nursery, hardened off in natural light and weather, never rushed. Your Nigella arrives in biodegradable or reusable Hado bags, which keep roots happy and reduce plastic waste.

Why Delft Blue stands out

Many Nigella mixes offer blue or white; Delft Blue offers blue on white — an elegant, hand-painted effect that looks high-end without any fuss. It sits beautifully with soft pastels, lavender tones, blush pinks and even bolder shades. If you arrange flowers for weddings, summer bouquets or subscription bunches, you’ll quickly find it becomes a favourite.

Florists love it for:

  • Painterly petals that look like miniature works of art

  • Fine, airy stems that float through arrangements

  • Effortless texture — an antidote to heavy, blocky flowers

  • Two harvests — fresh blooms and sculptural seed pods

Even a handful of stems in a little jug or vase transforms a kitchen table. If you’ve ever dreamed of a garden that looks like a watercolour painting, this is the flower to grow.

Raised on our Devon farm — strong, healthy & garden-ready

We grow your Nigella exactly how we grow our own cutting patch:

  • Real daylight

  • Natural airflow

  • Outdoor temperature swings

  • Gentle spacing

This makes our plugs tough, well-rooted and ready to plant, not soft greenhouse-grown seedlings. They transplant with confidence and begin establishing almost immediately, especially when placed into well-drained soil.

We use peat-free compost throughout our nursery, and we pack your plants in Hado biodegradable or reusable grow bags, protecting both the roots and the planet. Orders ship mid–late March, and you’ll receive a Royal Mail email or text once they’re dispatched. Each variety grows at its own pace, so timings vary slightly — we keep you informed every step of the way.

Planting & growing — Nigella is delightfully easy

Nigella is one of the lowest-maintenance cut flowers you can grow. It thrives in most gardens as long as the soil drains well.

Where to plant

  • Full sun gives the best bloom display

  • Light dappled shade is fine

  • Ideal for borders, cutting beds, cottage gardens, and pathways

Spacing

  • 20–25cm between plants for airflow and graceful stems

Watering

  • Water well at planting, then as needed

  • Once established, Nigella is tolerant of drier spells

Feeding

  • Not greedy — a balanced feed every couple of weeks is plenty

  • Avoid nitrogen-heavy fertilisers (they push leaf instead of flowers)

The seed pods — sculptural, magical and long-lasting

Nigella has a second life: once flowers fade, the seed pods form — rounded little lanterns with fine tracery lines. They are a florist’s dream. Use them fresh for wildflower-style arrangements or dry them for wreaths, autumn bouquets, installations or festive designs. They keep their structure exceptionally well, and unlike many dried plants, they don’t crumble.

Leave some pods to ripen and Delft Blue will self-seed lightly, sprinkling itself around in the most charming, cottage-garden way. It doesn’t get invasive — just pleasantly generous.
