Nigella African Bride — 6 Jumbo Plug Plants
Elegant white blooms with striking dark hearts
Nigella African Bride is one of those flowers that instantly elevates a garden or bouquet. Snow-white petals surround a dramatic inky centre, giving every bloom a chic, almost bridal contrast. It’s graceful, mysterious, and very designer-looking—yet still effortless to grow. If you want a cut flower that looks like something from high-end floristry without being fussy, African Bride is the one to plant.
These are 6 strong jumbo plug plants, raised in our South Devon nursery using peat-free compost. They’re well-rooted, grown in real outdoor conditions, and ready to take off once planted. We pack them in our biodegradable or reusable Hado plant bags, which protect the roots and avoid unnecessary plastic.
What makes Nigella African Bride special?
Unlike many white varieties, African Bride has deep burgundy–black centres that give each flower drama and depth. Even a handful of stems in a jar or bouquet look intentionally styled. With its cloudlike, ferny foliage, the plants appear to float across the bed, weaving in and around other flowers without dominating them.
Florists adore it because:
-
It adds contrast without heaviness
-
The stems are light, architectural and easy to place
-
It blends beautifully with blush, peach, mauve, blue, and pastel palettes
-
It pairs perfectly with dahlias, cosmos, snapdragons, campanula, ammi and scabiosa
Then come the seed pods, which are some of the most dramatic you can grow: globe-shaped capsules streaked with dark tracery, almost like antique lanterns. They dry beautifully and keep for months.
Raised on our Devon nursery — hardy & garden-ready
Because we grow your plants here in the UK, they’re used to wind, rain, temperature changes and real daylight. That means:
-
No weak, soft greenhouse growth
-
Better transplant success
-
Faster establishment
-
Compact, robust root systems
We raise everything using peat-free compost and sustainable practices. Your plants are packed in Hado biodegradable or reusable bags, not flimsy plastic sleeves. It’s better for the environment and kinder to the roots.
We ship in mid–late March (weather dependant) and you’ll receive a Royal Mail email/text when they’re dispatched. Every variety behaves slightly differently, so exact timings vary—but you’ll always be kept in the loop.
Planting & care
Nigella African Bride is famously unfussy. It thrives in most gardens with just the basics in place.
Position
-
Full sun is ideal
-
Light shade is fine
-
Plant directly into beds, borders, cut-flower patches or large containers
Spacing
-
20–25cm apart for good airflow and strong stems
Watering
-
Water well when planting and during establishment
-
Once settled, Nigella is drought tolerant and very low maintenance
Feeding
-
Optional: a balanced liquid feed every couple of weeks
-
Avoid overly rich nitrogen fertilisers—flowers, not leaves, should be the star
From bloom to pod — two harvests in one
Nigella is one of the most generous plants you can grow. The first harvest is the flower: elegant, airy and graceful. The second harvest is the seed pod: sculptural, textural and long-lasting. Allow some pods to dry on the plant and Nigella will often self-seed lightly, popping up the next year in charming little drifts. It’s not invasive—just quietly helpful.
